I never thought I’d be crafting my personal brand around my hair color, but it turns out being blonde isn’t always more fun.

I can’t recall the first instance where being blonde was used against me, but there are a few stories that stick out:

I was told by a parent in high school that if I cut my hair shorter and dyed it brown, I would be taken more seriously at college interviews. So, I got highlights. I was accepted to all of the colleges I applied to.

When I was a freshman in college, I had an advisor who told me I would never succeed in a science-related major because I didn’t “look” the part. I received a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia. Go Dawgs.

For the first month of my job as a zookeeper, my coworkers referred to me solely as Cinderella. It was only when I left that job over a year later that I got an apology, pat on the back, and a ‘job surprisingly well done.’

You can be boujee, brainy, and a badass all at the same time. Don’t let anyone tell you different. BATTLING BLONDE isn’t about fighting my hair color. It’s about embracing it.
